When I got asked to write a blog on marketing, I thought’ where to start? So I thought, why not write a blog about blogging?

I love all things digital and digital marketing is clearly going to be sticking around for a while. As a marketer it is vital that I write blogs but it isn’t always easy to do – there are lots of things to think about along the way, whilst making sure a blog is appealing and optimised for SEO purposes.

Structuring your blog

A well organised blog with an interesting title is what helps capture the reader’s attention and make them want to read more.  Keep titles short yet snappy and don’t forget to include a keyword or two.  The first paragraph should then go on to explain what your blog is going to be about, you need to keep the reader interested or they’ll lose interest and seek information elsewhere. I like to have sub titles as it makes a blog easily accessible for readers. Remember to add a final paragraph with your company’s contact details so that readers know how they can get in touch.

Give your blog a voice and style

When trying to write a blog you may find yourself freezing up but just relax and words will come to you. Everyone has their unique blogging style. Writing a blog is a fantastic way to voice your opinion.
It is important to have an engaging style and some interesting material as this will help engage your audience. A blog is a conversation, so you need to try and write the way you speak, you don’t need to over complicate it with clichés – you just need to be you.

It is always a good idea to start with those topics you are enthusiastic about and a great way to find new blog ideas is by reading other people’s blogs.  Just remember to write in a friendly and informal way whilst remembering to think about your readers and what they can learn from reading your blog.

Keep it updated

I would suggest you blog often, however short the posts are, you want to make your readers come back for more.  So whether you update your blog on a weekly, bimonthly or monthly basis you need to be consistent so that your readers know when to expect another one. The blogs that are viewed the most are the ones which are kept up-to-date. To avoid blogging becoming too time consuming, you could ask several colleagues to write blogs for your company – you might be surprised by the ideas others can bring to the table!

Invite people to comment

It’s important to let others comment on your blogs – it allows you to interact with your readers and get some valuable feedback about your blog.  You will however, need to keep an eye on your comments as anyone is able to comment including spammers. A good way to get around this is by putting a security feature on your blogs so that you have to approve comments before they go live on your site.

Optimise for SEO

After you finish writing your blog you will need to read back over it to check for spelling mistakes, but more importantly to optimise it so that it can be easily found through relevant searches. Have a look through and make sure you have used enough keywords throughout without ruining the enjoyment of reading the blog.  Find out more here
