How to turn a birthday celebration into a huge PR event
PRG helped AGE Concern Eastbourne raise its local profile and increase footfall to its day centre by organising a week of events to celebrate its 65th birthday.
PRG recommended that the charity launch the week with a birthday party at its day centre, inviting local residents to join the celebrations.
The event and a celebrity appearance!
PRG negotiated with a local cake baker, who agreed to donate a 100-tall cupcake birthday cake, and secured a swing band at a minimum fee for the day’s entertainment.
We recommended the charity personally invite a celebrity to
the party, and helped secure EastEnders and Gavin and Stacey
star,
Larry Lamb, and his son, television presenter George Lamb.
PRG
also invited Eastbourne’s MP and Deputy Mayor.
AGE Concern Eastbourne chairman, Greg Szanto, opened the
birthday
with a welcome speech and invited Larry and his son to cut
the
cake. Guests enjoyed complimentary refreshments and birthday
cake, while listening to swing music from the ’50s and ’60s
and
posing for photographs with the Lambs. The Venton Centre
was full
to capacity and Mr Szanto said he’d never seen so many
visitors
through the door.
To follow the party and complete the birthday week, PRG organised
a sequence of events targeted at the charity’s core market of
over
65’s. These included an arts and crafts day, movie screening
of ’
50s and ’60s films and a gardening presentation.
Pre-event promotion
PRG promoted the birthday events to local residents through
PR,
generating pre-event editorial in local newspapers and on
the radio.
We designed supporting marketing collateral, including
posters
and adverts, and co-ordinated a direct mail campaign,
sending
leaflets to targeted neighbourhoods in the local area.
PRG sold sponsorship to local businesses for each event,
which
not only contributed towards event costs, but also
introduced
new and valuable business partners to the charity.
Press, radio and TV coverage
PRG invited key local journalists to attend the birthday events.
As a result, the celebrations received coverage in local
newspapers,
on the local radio station and on regional
television news.
The event has since received editorial in a
number of regional
lifestyle magazines.
